World in Progress: Criminalizing dissent in India

In India, a colonial era sedition law is still in place, despite efforts to scrap it. Mahatma Gandhi was charged under the law in the 1920s. Today, critics say it's a convenient legal tool to stifle any voice or perspective that goes against what the state perceives as nationalism or patriotism. Just cheering for Pakistan during a cricket match can lead to charges.
