World Cup Visits to Hit Supporters in the Pocket, Says Study
May 28, 2006
"Germany, the World Cup host nation, is amongst the most expensive countries participating in the World Cup and only a handful of countries have more expensive overall living costs," said Lee Quane, ECA's general manager in Hong Kong.
"This means that the majority of supporters traveling to Germany will find the cost of everyday goods and services higher than they are used to."
Unless the traveling fans are from Japan, South Korea, Sweden, Switzerland, France and Britain, the foray to Germany will be a costly affair, especially for supporters from Paraguay, the survey said.
Paraguayans can expect a 110 percent jump in living costs, paying three times more for a tube of toothpaste in Germany, four times more for a packet of pain relief tablets and six times as much for a packet of cigarettes, it said.
Fans paying over the odds for beer, beds etc.
Should tournament favorite Brazil reach the final, traveling fans from that country can expect to pay an average 3,041 euros ($3,886) for four weeks' accommodation in a three-star hotel, compared to 1,903 euros at home.
Australians flying to Germany to support their team's first World Cup finals in 32 years will have to pay 15 percent more for a beer while Singapore-based fans can expect to pay 50 percent more for a camera film.
Japanese supporters though will be better off as living costs in Germany are 25 percent lower in Germany, with a pint of beer costing one-third less in the host country, the survey said.
