The Refrakt augmented-reality app

German artists Carla Streckwall and Alexander Govoni are giving old masterpieces a new life with their augmented-reality app Refrakt. It brings art off the wall and into virtual space.

The elephant standing in the room at Berlin's Gemäldegalerie is pink -- and it's just stepped out of an old masterpiece in 3D. And that’s no hallucination! Museum-goers with the Refrakt app on their smartphones and tablets can make the illusion a virtual reality just by pointing their screen toward the painting. And the classical museum visit becomes a digital art adventure.
