The 25th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall on November 9 is also being celebrated online. Various apps and Twitter projects let users recreate that historic day. And a number of online projects are helping to preserve its memory.
1989 was a momentous year not just in Germany, but also in the rest of Central and Eastern Europe. A variety of web projects are marking the big anniversary online. The europeana1989.eu project, for example, is collecting memorabilia from former Eastern Bloc states and digitizing them for its online collection. Almost 11,000 entries have already been uploaded. The events of fall 1989 are also being commemorated on Twitter and a variety of online sites. There’s also an augmented reality app that merges past and present at historic Berlin sites.
