Protesters Throw Eggs at Schröder

Opponents to the German government's labor market reforms threw eggs at Chancellor Gerhard Schröder in the eastern German town of Wittenberge on Tuesday. None of the projectiles hit Schröder, who was visiting to take part in the re-opening of Wittenberge's train station. "We will implement this process in opposition to every protest," the chancellor said in his subsequent speech. Around 200 demonstrators had gathered in the Brandenburg town carrying posters that read: "We want work" and "East Germans defend yourselves." On Monday evening ten thousands of people, mainly in eastern Germany, took to the streets to protest against the reforms.
