Poland is tackling the housing crisis with a bold concept: Offering rent discounts to tenants who renovate dilapidated apartments themselves.

The government's "renovate to rent" program has attracted hundreds of applicants in Krakow and Kielce despite the hefty repairs needed to make the apartments livable.

With Polish property prices soaring — up 30% in Krakow in 2024 — this model offers some hope to families and individuals who have been shut out of the market.

DW meets those who have chosen to attempt to turn ruins into a dream home.
