Molotov cocktail thrown at Sam Altman's home, man arrested

OpenAI said a man was arrested Friday over a Molotov cocktail attack on Sam Altman's San Francisco home. 

Altman is the CEO of OpenAI, which is known for its popular AI tool ChatGPT. OpenAI said threats were also made to the company's headquarters in San Francisco.

What did OpenAI say about the Molotov cocktail attack?

"Thankfully, no one was hurt," the AI company said, while expressing gratitude over the response of the San Francisco Police Department.  

The 20-year-old man who was arrested over the attack has not yet been identified by police. Charges have also not been filed in the case.    

Altman has also not yet commented on the arrest.

According to local newspaper the San Francisco Chronicle, firefighters responded to reports of a fire at a home just before 4 a.m. When they arrived, security guards at the property reportedly had extinguished the fire at the home's exterior gate.

The suspect who started the fire had fled before firefighters arrived, officials told the Chronicle.

Suspect threatens company's headquarters

The San Francisco Chronicle also reported that an hour after the incident at Altman's house, police responded to reports of a man threatening to burn down a building where OpenAI is headquartered.

Police reportedly identified the man as the same person involved in the Molotov cocktail incident and arrested him.

OpenAI spokesperson Jamie Radice said the company was working with law enforcement in its investigation.

"We deeply appreciate how quickly SFPD responded and the support from the city in helping keep our employees safe. The individual is in custody," said Radice.
