Israel says 2 Revolutionary Guard commanders killed

Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz said on Saturday that Israel's military had killed a commander in the Iranian Quds force, an elite arm of Iran's Revolutionary Guard.

The commander was identified as Saeed Izadi and was said to have financed and armed the Palestianian militant group Hamas in preparation for the attack it led on Israel on October 7, 2023, which triggered the ongoing Israeli war on Gaza.

Izadi was killed in a strike on an apartment in Qom, in central Iran, Katz said.

Israel later said on Saturday that it also killed a second commander in the overseas arm of Iran's Revolutionary Guard in an overnight strike on his vehicle in western Tehran.

The commander was identified as Benham Shariyari, who the military in a statement said "was responsible for all weapons transfers from the Iranian regime to its proxies across the Middle East."

The IDF added that Lebanese militia Hezbollah, the Palestinian militant group Hamas and Houthi rebels in Yemen had all received missiles and rockets from him that were then launched at Israel.

There was no confirmation from the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps on the killing of the two commanders.

The Quds Force carries out covert operations on behalf of the Revolutionary Guard outside Iran.
