The Netherlands, like many other European countries, is grappling with a rapidly aging population. Rising life expectancy and stagnating fertility rates mean there are generally fewer care workers and less funding for nursing facilities to go around. But staff at a retirement home in the city of Deventer have come up with a solution, inviting students to live for free in treturn for friendship.
