Saving migrants from the clutches of death leaves a profound impact not just on the crew of search and rescue patrols, but also ordinary fishermen. In April, 800 migrants died in what the United Nations called "the deadliest incident ever recorded in the Mediterranean." The tragedy sparked a crisis of conscience across Europe.
