'Harry Potter' is Germany's 2016 top seller

J.K. Rowling has wowed readers for years with her best-selling "Harry Potter" novels - and Germans are no exception. "Harry Potter and the Cursed Child" led 2016 in selling the greatest number of copies in Germany.

"Harry Potter and the Cursed Child," published unter the title "Harry Potter und das verwunschene Kind," is the official script book for the eponymous stage play by J.K. Rowling, John Tiffany and Jack Thorne. The book in German grabbed the biggest sales in literature Germany this year, with the English original coming in third, GfK Entertainment, a media sales analysis company, announced on Wednesday.

Rowling's first 'Harry Potter' manuscript was rejected by numerous publishers

This is the sixth top-seller for Rowling in Germany. It is the eighth story in the "Harry Potter" series and depicts the character as an older, tired employee of the Ministry of Magic. Harry must also now contend with being the father of three children in school, particularly grappling with the struggles of his youngest, Albus, and the family legacy.

The play itself has been running in London since the end of July.

Another British author a top-seller

Another British author to top the German charts is Jojo Moyes, with her works "Über uns der Himmel, unter uns das Meer" (English original: "The Ship of Brides" ), which took second place, and "Ein ganzes halbes Jahr" ("Me Before You"  in English), that garnered fourth place.
