Fischer Shows Sunny Side After Egg Attack
August 23, 2005Those who say Joschka Fischer has become too serious during his years at the top of the German foreign ministry should think again. On Monday, the popular Green party politician proved he's as quick-witted as ever after an egg hurled at him by a protester at an election rally splattered at his feet, splashing yolk onto his trousers.
"What kind was it -- free range or mass produced?" the veteran environmentalist shouted to the crowd.
Amid the ensuing laughter, Fischer addressed the egg-thrower, suggesting he or she "go and make some scrambled eggs."
The incident occurred as Fischer was addressing a rally ahead of September's general election. Protesters repeatedly tried to drown him out with angry shouts over benefit cuts for the jobless.
The egg was not the first projectile to be aimed at Fischer. In 1999, during a debate about the NATO bombardment, he was the target of a paint bomb which caused damage to his ear drum.
