Nigeria school blast

A blast at a school in Nigeria's northern city of Kano has killed several people. No one has yet claimed responsibility for the explosion.

Nigerian security officials say a blast at a state college in the city of Kano on Monday killed at least eight people.

"So far, 20 have been taken to the hospital. Of that, eight have been confirmed dead," Kano state police chief Aderele Shinaba told journalists on the grounds of the Kano State School of Hygiene.

It was not immediately clear who was behind the deadly explosion. Kano is Nigeria's second-largest city and the biggest in the country's north.

Northern Nigeria faces almost daily bombings and attacks by the militant group Boko Haram, which is trying to establish an Islamist state. The group, whose name loosely translates to "Western education is sinful" gained the world's attention in April when it abducted more than 200 school girls.

Amnesty International estimates more than 1,500 people were killed in violence in northeastern Nigeria in the first three months of 2014.

Shinaba told reporters that police were investigating the blast.
