A different kind of Indian restaurant
"The concept behind the restaurant is that it is trendy, modern, not like a typical Indian restaurant with Buddhas on the walls. It's about showing people that India is not all about poverty and yoga…Actually, it is typically Indian, but not the kind of India that you know!" - Aparna Aurora
Successful change
Aparna Aurora ended her 20-year career in the fashion industry to focus on her passion, cooking, and open up her restaurant. Indian-British author Salman Rushdie inspired her in naming her restaurant "Chutnify." In one of his novels, he speaks of the process of "chutnification" - the absorption of Indian culture in British culture.
Berlin is becoming more chutnified...
The first Chutnify restaurant is located in Prenzlauer Berg, in Berlin's eastern section. Following the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1990, a young, artistic crowd discovered the district. Since then, it's attracted international guests. Diners have appreciated the South Indian cuisine so much that Aparna Aurora has opened up a second restaurant in the Western part of the city.

Spices play an important role in South Indian cuisine. Garam masala is especially popular. It's a fiery spice mix one can easily make oneself. For black pepper pork dosa, the meat should cook in the spicy sauce for at least 45 minutes.
