Chancellor Merz hits optimistic note in New Year's address

Friedrich Merz used his New Year's address to call on society to come together to ensure prosperity. The German chancellor reflected on the many challenges facing the country and the difficult decisions that lie ahead.

In his first New Year's address as German chancellor, Friedrich Merz struck an optimistic tone, urging confidence over fear.

Merz reaffirmed Germany's commitment to Europe and continued support for Ukraine amid Russia's ongoing war. He also highlighted the challenges of an ageing society and called for fair social security reforms.

Looking ahead, he envisioned 2026 as a year of renewal for Germany and Europe, restoring peace, freedom and prosperity.
