Thursday sees the main part of the Carnival season in many parts of Germany. And to fully join the festivities, you need a crazy or sexy costume. So it's a very busy time of year for department stores, costume rental agencies and body painters.
As the carnival season opens in western Germany, tens of thousands of residents take to the streets to party. The season of beer, colorful costumes and silliness is set to last until Ash Wednesday in March next year.
