Calls for regime overhaul boost exiled heir to Iran monarchy

The fall of the last shah reshaped Iran, replacing monarchy with the Islamic Republic. Decades later, the shah's exiled son Reza Pahlavi is backing anti-regime protesters who demand change.

Decades of monarchic and autocratic rule under Shah Mohammad Reza Pahlavi led to widespread iunrest in Iran. Mass protests in 1978 forced the shah into exile, which the clerics exploited to create the Islamic Republic in 1979. Today, the shah's exiled son Reza Pahlavi is positioning himself as a supporter of anti-regime protesters.
