A visit to Sofia: thousands of years of history have given the city much to offer, from reminders of ancient times to monumental communist-era buildings.
Bulgaria’s capital Sofia is definitely worth a visit. The city certainly has plenty to offer. Its millennia of history reach from ancient ruins to modern-day communist monuments.
In Bulgaria, parts of the former Eastern Bloc barrier are still standing, now weathered and overgrown. It was here that East Berliner Hendrik Voigtländer tried to escape to the West — but it didn't end well.
Up until the fall of the Berlin Wall, at least 2,000 GDR citizens tried to flee to the West via Bulgaria. Most of them were caught — some of them killed. Historian Christopher Nehring researched their stories.
Ahead of the European elections in May, the EU is in the midst of its most radical crisis ever, warns Bulgarian political scientist Ivan Krastev. He says the bloc needs more courage and less German risk aversion.
