Some of the world's worst rights abusers already have seats on the UN Human Rights Council. The Philippines and Eritrea have been controversially elected to join the likes of Saudi Arabia and Egypt.
The rights group has said the arrests were made in house raids that began early Thursday. The arrests are part of an ongoing crackdown on dissent by President Abdel-Fattah el-Sissi's government.
Rights groups condemned the verdict as politically motivated and the latest sign of a crackdown on any dissent. Sheikh Ali Salman and two aides had been acquitted in June.
