An active shooter opened fire at a mosque in San Diego in the United States, and police say multiple people may have been shot.

Aerial television footage shows children being escorted from the mosque grounds as dozens of police vehicles surround the area.

The threat has been "neutralized," the San Diego Police Department said in its latest social media update (as of 1400 PT/2100 GMT). But the situation is not clear yet.

California Governor Gavin Newsom's office said he was briefed. "We are grateful to the first responders on the scene working to protect the community and urge everyone to follow guidance from local authorities," his office posted to X.

The Islamic Center's website says its mission is to not only serve the Muslim population but also "work with the larger community to serve the less fortunate, to educate, and to better our nation."

Five daily prayers are held there, and the mosque works with other organizations and people of all faiths on social causes.
