Tahiti's Polynesian culture has been suppressed by the legacy of French colonialism, after some traditional practices, like tattooing, were banned for decades. But the language and customs of the ancestors are making a comeback.
France is being taken to the International Criminal Court for nuclear weapons tests in French Polynesia. France has long denied responsibility for the impacts of the tests and only recently began compensating civilians.
Although Europe's former colonial empires have been largely broken up, several countries remain overseas territories. While some enjoy relative autonomy, others are pushing for independence.
Australia has welcomed French President Emmanuel Macron on his first official visit, focused on defense links and climate change. Macron will later head to New Caledonia, one of France's territories in the South Pacific.
The German government has handed over the remains of indigenous men and women killed during the colonial era. Namibian activists have called on Berlin to apologize for massacring thousands and provide reparations.
