World Music Awards 2014 handed out

For the 22nd time, the International World Music Awards were conferred on Tuesday (27.05.2014) in Monaco, where honorees included Miley Cyrus, Ricky Martin and German singer-songwriter Tim Bendzko.

The event opened with true star power courtesy of Mariah Carey, a singer who has sold over 200 million albums and had the most Number One singles in the US. In Monaco, she earned another significant trophy to add to add to her shelves, this time the Pop Icon Award. Puerto Rican singer and actor Ricky Martin was also honored for lifetime achievements with the Latin Legend Award.

Best Entertainer of the Year went to Miley Cyrus, who took home a second trophy for selling the most albums. Berlin's country music septet The BossHoss traveled to Monaco after being nominated in the categories Best Live Act, Best Album, Best Video and Best Song, while Berlin singer Tim Bendzko took the stage to perform his song, "Unter meiner Haut" (Under My Skin).

Performances for the illustrious crowd also came from Miley Cyrus, American singer-songwriter Jason Derulo ("Talk Dirty"), the British rappers Tinie Tempah, DJ Naughty Boy, American rapper Flo Rida and the Chicago alternative rock band Fall Out Boy. Artists from all genres and continents are nominated for World Music Awards based on sales, resulting in a nearly endless list of nominees from 180 countries. The colorful event's proceeds often go to charity. 23 WMA hospitals, schools and orphanages in Africa, Latin America, Asia and the Middle East have been built from the proceeds thus far. Yesterday's earnings are intended to go toward funding a second orphanage in Haiti.
