A severe drought is threatening Somalia. The UN estimates that 5 million people in Somalia need aid, amid warnings of a full-blown famine. Up to 270,000 children are suffering from severe acute malnutrition this year.
Hunger and disease have killed 85,000 children under the age of five in Yemen since 2015, according to Save the Children. Its estimate coincides with a UN envoy's visit to Sanaa as the warring parties prepare for talks.
Years of conflict in the Central African Republic mean most children there are threatened with war, disease and hunger and are in dire need of help, the UN children's agency said. And things are only getting worse.
Fourteen million people are facing "an imminent and great big famine," said a top UN aid official. Yemen has been described as the world's worst humanitarian crisis due to a proxy war fueled by a regional rivalry.
More than 5 million children are at risk of famine in war-torn Yemen, according to the charity Save the Children. Renewed attacks on the key port city of Hodeida could further disrupt food, fuel and aid supplies.
