A Volkswagen spokesman called the report from automobile industry trade journal Automobilwoche wrong and said rumors that Wolfgang Bernhard was in salary negotiations with Europe's biggest car manufacturer were also untrue. Bernhard has been making news in the car world since DaimlerChrysler's supervisory board blocked his ascension to the top job at the Mercedes division in April. The hard-charging Bernhard, 43, was seen as a tough cost-cutter during his tenure, which lasted from November 2000 to February 2004, he was also credited with championing a slew of vehicles that moved the Chrysler brand upmarket.
