Vintage: 1957 Lotus Elite

April 18, 2012

Looking around Wolfburg's Zeithaus Musem, Christoph Bauer discovers one of the more innovative sports cars of the 1950s: the Lotus Elite. Just over a thousand of this model were built between 1957 and 1963. Founder of Lotus Colin Chapman ventured into new technical territory with this model. The body and the chassis were constructed completely from fiberglass parts, which were then fused together. The Elite also featured a purist interior design, paired with low-slung seating and a snappy gear shift.
