In a tit-for-tat diplomatic stand-off, the US forced the Chinese consulate in Houston, Texas to shut down, calling it a hub for espionage and intellectual property theft. China retaliated by ordering the American consulate in Chengdu to close.
Beijing made the demand in retaliation for the closure of China's Houston consulate earlier this week over alleged Chinese espionage. The move was described as a response to "unreasonable measures" by the United States.
