Heavy snowfall has trapped thousands of tourists at one of Switzerland’s most popular skiing destinations. Large parts of Alpine France and Italy have also been affected.
Two German skiers have been killed by avalanches in western Austria. Thousands of winter tourists remain trapped in major resorts in the Austrian Alps due to heavy snowfall.
Tourists in the Swiss resort town of Zermatt under the Matterhorn mountain peak have been stranded for the second time in a month. Officials expected more snow overnight.
Authorities have begun airlifting stranded tourists by helicopter after road and rail links to Zermatt were cut off. At least 80 centimeters of snow dropped on the town over 24 hours.
Trains from popular Swiss ski station Zermatt are due to reopen Wednesday, providing relief for some 13,000 tourists trapped there by heavy snowfall.
