In Istanbul, Turkey’s largest city, there are hundreds, perhaps even thousands, of meyhanes. Their history dates back centuries. To this day, meyhanes remain lively, welcoming places where people gather with friends or family to share food, conversation and good company. A visit often begins with "meze” — small, artfully prepared dishes made fresh every day. They're displayed in glass cases, which makes it easier to choose. Drinking alcohol in a meyhane is part of the experience and sets them apart from many other Turkish restaurants. Some meyhanes even feature live music.
