The search for the best-sounding wood

Enchanted wood. That’s Andreas Pahler’s passion. He’s a tonewood supplier, constantly on the lookout for the perfect Alpine spruce to turn into valuable violins and other stringed instruments.

Roaming through the Bavarian mountains, he single-handedly chooses every suitable tree, which he later saws into shape to be used as tonewood. He then sells it off from his timber yard to luthiers all over the world.

Report by Ruth Krause.
