The prostate: A small, peculiar organ that plays a big role

The prostate is a small gland, about the size of a ping-pong ball — but it plays a crucial role in men’s health. Acting like a switch, it directs both urine from the bladder and semen into the urethra. During sexual arousal, it works with the bladder sphincter to block urine flow.
The prostate also produces a fluid that protects sperm, supplies nutrients and has antibacterial properties. As men age, hormonal changes can cause the prostate to enlarge, leading to urinary problems. Prostate cancer is one of the most common cancers in men worldwide — but when detected early, it is often highly treatable.
