The dangers of Internet telephony

A growing number of telecoms operators are switching to voice-over-IP. A third of all landline calls worldwide are now made via the Internet. While the technology is cheaper than its predecessors, data protection experts warn of the dangers it brings to privacy.

Making phone calls via the Internet could be completely bug-proof. End-to-end encryption is not a major problem technically - but until now it has not been automatically implemented by telecoms operators. Data protection experts are sounding the alarm. They want to see telecoms providers encrypting data in general, and especially with phone calls.
