German Olympians flying high

Figure eight
Among Germany's gold medalists were Aljona Savchenko and Bruno Massot. Their gold-medal performance at Gangneung Ice Arena in South Korea was Germany's first in pairs figure skating since Ria Baran and Paul Falk in 1952.
Silver lining
Markus Kink, Matthias Plachta, Frank Mauer and Danny Aus den Birken (from left to right) were disappointed seconds after losing to the Olympic Athletes from Russia in the gold-medal game in ice hockey. Their frowns would quickly turn to smiles when they received their silver medals. Having upset Sweden and Canada to get to the final, this was Germany's first silver medal in the Olympic ice hockey.
Ice-cold water skiing
The residents of Jaun, Switzerland must not mind the cold! This waterslide competition that took place at the end of February involves contestants attempting to glide as far as they can along a pool of water dug out of the snow.
Flipping for joy
Nantes' forward Yacine Bammou scored two goals against Caen in a French Ligue 1 match and celebrated one of them with a perfectly executed back flip. However, he may have flipped prematurely, as Caen wound up winning the game 3-2.
World Cup picture
The World Cup trophy made a stop in Nairobi in February as part of its world tour before the 2018 World Cup in Russia. Kenyan dancers were present for its arrival at Jomo Kenyatta International airport, one taking an opportune selfie with the trophy's personal plane.
The referee's guard
To say the least, fans watching the Copa Libetadores match between Colombian club Santa Fe and Venezuela's Tachira were not happy with the decisions of Uruguayan referee Daniel Fedorczuk. Members of the national guard had to shield him from incoming objects as he left the Polideportivo de Puebla Nuevo stadium in San Cristobal, Venezuela.

French muscher Romain Da Fonseca and his sled dogs leave Hendaye, a French town on the bay of Biscay near the Spanish border as they embark on an attempt to cross the Pyrenee mountains and reach the city of Banyuls-sur-Mer — a 900-kilometer (559-mile) journey.
Waist-deep
A competitor wades his way through a water obstacle in the Tough Guy endurance event near Wolverhampton in central England. Thousands of competitors participated in the grueling race, in which participants are confonted with more than 200 obstacles.
Best briefs
Runners jog along the banks of the Danube river in Belgrade during the Serbian capital's annual "Underpants Run." The temperature was zero Celsius (32 degrees Fahrenheit), but that didn't stop these competitors from sporting nothing but their best briefs!
More than just a polar bear dip
This swimming competition in Lithuania is a little different from most. In late February, some hardy souls took part in an annual winter-swimming event in Trakai — where the air temperature was -12 degrees Celsius (10 degrees Fahrenheit).
