Subsumed by the shadows: India's missing children
Every year, thousands of children are reported missing in India and many of them are never found. Some run away from home, but others are abducted and in some cases assaulted or forced into labor.
Tragic fate
According to a survey conducted by Bachpan Bachao Andolan, which translates to "save the children movement," 11 children go missing every hour in India. At least four are never found.
Caged in
Pinky, 16, was rescued from the house of a middle class family in New Delhi where she was forcefully kept as a domestic servant, without pay.
Searching far and wide

Runaways
Children who run away from home often end up working as bonded laborers or illegally in tea stalls, farms, garages and carpet industries. Police raided a garage that was employing children and rescued this child in the capital, New Delhi.
Perseverance
Here, a boy clutches pictures of his missing sister. Even after six years, the family still distributes photos of the girl in the hope she will turn up.
The long wait
This picture shows a rescued child living in a transitional house. He has lived there for one year, waiting to be reunited with his family.
Happy reunion
Here, Arjun is shown being reunited with his mother. He says he was chained and forced to work on a farm for two years. His mother says she never gave up hope.
Tragic precaution
