The US has started to cut federal spending after President Obama and opposition Republicans failed to strike an 11th hour deal on tax increases. Many Americans are angry at the events in Washington.
Top Republicans have rejected the US president's "moral equivalency" with regards to Russian meddling in the US 2016 election. House Speaker Paul Ryan reminded Trump that Russia was "no ally" of the US.
In an interview with US media, Trump claimed Germany's chancellor is "paying Russia billions of dollars." Putin claimed a probe into Russian meddling is just "political games." Both appeared fond of newfound relations.
After praising the US's relationship with Germany, President Donald Trump is accusing the country of skimping on its defense budget. Earlier in the day, he'd put on a smile while addressing reporters with Angela Merkel.
Germany spends 1.24 percent of its GDP on defense and has promised to increase that figure to 1.5 percent by 2024. But Jens Stoltenberg, the head of the NATO alliance, says Berlin needs to spend much more than that.
