The yellow-spotted river turtle, native to southeastern Peru, is on the brink of extinction. Together with the local conservation authority, the Frankfurt Zoological Society is working to save them - and preserve an entire ecosystem.
Yellow-spotted river turtle eggs are a delicacy in Peru. Communities who once collected the eggs to eat themselves are now selling them for ever higher prices, pushing the turtles to the brink of extinction.
