Carnival in the Rhineland
As the carnival season opens in western Germany, tens of thousands of residents take to the streets to party. The season of beer, colorful costumes and silliness is set to last until Ash Wednesday in March next year.
Attention Carnival fans: Be aware that it can be a cruel fate to live in the Rhineland if you are a non-reveler. For when the yearly festivity comes to town it is accompanied by heavy drinking, garbage and aggression.
Thousands of Germans dressed in colorful and creative costumes have braved the cold and rainy weather on Saturday to mark the beginning of Carnival season, also known as the "fifth season" in the country.
