At dawn on September 5, 1972, Palestinian militants took 11 Israeli athletes hostage, killing two of them. The other athletes and a policeman died in a failed rescue attempt by German police. DW talks to the widows of two of the athletes.
45 years after the terrorist attack at the 1972 Olympic Games in Munich, a permanent memorial will be unveiled at the Olympic Park. It commemorates the 11 Israeli athletes and a German police officer who were killed.
A memorial for the 12 victims of the terrorist attack at the 1972 Olympics has opened in Munich. German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier and Israeli President Reuven Rivlin presided over the unveiling.
