French President Emmanuel Macron and German Chancellor Angela Merkel have put on a united front at talks in Berlin. But they disagree about how to reform the EU. Macron is proposing deeper ties, but he's facing resistance from a cautious Merkel.
The German chancellor has given an impassioned speech on the merits of international cooperation and multilateralism. She warned against "destructive isolationism" at the inauguration of the Paris Peace Forum.
Merkel wants to halt all arms exports to Saudi Arabia pending the investigation of the killing of Jamal Khashoggi. Macron says such calls are "pure demagoguery."
The US president has said his French counterpart's comment about the need to create an EU army was "very insulting." Trump is set to take part in ceremonies in France to mark the 100 years since the end of World War I.
