Although Greece will officially exit the EU’s bailout program on August 20, the country will continue to be monitored by its former lenders, which will look at how reforms are being implemented and the economy develops.
Merkel and Tsipras discussed Greece's return to economic stability as well as immigration and Macedonia. Protests, banned in hopes of avoiding scenes similar to her last visit, were quelled by police using tear gas.
Greece's "enormous contribution" in handling migration has been extolled by Chancellor Angela Merkel. Ending her two-day visit to Athens, she said the 28-member EU must do more to protect its external border.
