Haute couture on Colombia’s mean streets

The fashion designer Diamantina Arcoiris knowingly relocated her studio to Santa Fé, one of the most dangerous districts of Bogota. Crack, glue and alcohol abound; prostitution is rife. She gives them a chance to embroider her dresses and strut their stuff on the catwalk.

Life in Santa Fe revolves around crack, glue and cheap alcohol. Diamantina Arcoiris employs social outcasts, giving them a chance to create a daily structure for their lives and to have prospects for the future, as well as boosting their self-confidence. But hers is not a social project; it’s a business selling haute couture. The designer is currently planning a fashion show. Can she pull it off? A report by Xenia Böttcher.
