Germany's 16 States: Hessen

The Frankfurt skyline and the documenta international art exhibition are cultural beacons, but Hessen is also home to the Brothers Grimm, whose folk and fairy tales went around the world.

Hessen lies in the middle of Germany and is a state of contrasts: idyllic towns with half-timbered houses in northern and southern Hesse on the one hand, and, on the other, the famous skyline of skyscrapers in Frankfurt. You don't have to be an architectural expert to be inspired by both worlds.

Travel tips for Hessen


Frankfurt airport is the first thing many international visitors see in Germany. It's worth taking a trip into the center of this city in Hessen. Like Berlin, Hamburg, Munich and Cologne, Frankfurt is one of Germany's cultural hubs – with museums ranging from the house where Goethe was born to the famous art collections of the Städel Museum on Museumsufer – the museum-lined embankment of the River Main.

The Lahn is a tributary of the Rhine that is very popular with people who like to holiday on the water. An especially lovely section lies in southern Hessen, according to DW's travel magazine Check-in host, Nicole Frölich: the romantic Lahn valley.

Grimm World in Kassel

The Brothers Grimm collected many of the folk tales for which they became known worldwide in northern Hessen around the city of Kassel. The city has devoted an entire world to their work.

Bergpark Wilhelmshöhe, UNESCO World Heritage site

Kassel isn't known only for the Brothers Grimm, but also for Bergpark Wilhelmshöhe, which is a UNESCO World Heritage site. This hillside landscape park also includes a palace, of course.
