Nicolas Massu and Fernando Gonzalez won Chile's first ever Olympic gold medal when they beat Kiefer and Schüttler 6-2, 4-6, 3-6, 7-6 (9/7) 6-4 in the Olympic tennis tournament men's doubles final early Sunday morning.

The Chileans saved four match points in the fourth set tie-breaker, fighting their way back from 6/2 down to take the set 9/7.

Then Massu broke Kiefer with a fantastic passing shot which just squeezed in for a 5-4 lead in the fifth set and Gonzalez served out the match after the Germans had saved a match point themselves.

The match started at 11 p.m. Saturday and finished at 2:40 a.m. with Massu and Gonzalez throwing themselves into each other's arms and rolling on the court.

Massu has to gird himself for a chance at another gold medal when he plays Mardy Fish of the United States in Sunday's men's singles final.

Gonzalez had earlier won the men's singles bronze medal when he beat unseeded American Taylor Dent 6-4, 2-6, 16-14 in a match that dragged on for 3hr 25min.

Chile have now won one gold, three silver and seven bronze medals since 1896.
