German census shows smaller population

Germany's first national census since reunification has resulted in a downward correction of the country's population, from a previously estimated 81.8 million to 80.2 million. The difference owes largely to fewer foreigners living in the country than previously believed. Almost 20 percent of people now living in Germany have an immigrant background.
