Cuban media have reported that the country's former leader, Fidel Castro, appeared at a media event on Friday announcing the publication of a new, two-volume memoir entitled 'Guerrilla of Time.'

The book is a look back at Castro's life beginning with his earliest memories as a child and ending in December, 1958 at the height of Cuban Revolution.

Journalist Katiuska Blanco worked with Castro in compiling the memoir and the book takes a question and answer form.

Ever since handing control of the country over to his brother Raul in 2006, Fidel Castro has rarely been seen in public. However his book unveiling ceremony lasted around six hours.

Castro's comments to reporters during the book event also strayed away from the memoir itself at times. He said he closely followed the events in Venezuela under President Hugo Chavez, with whom Castro is good friends.

"No one did more [than Chavez] for the people of Venezuela, the Bolivarian Movement," he said.

Protests by Chilean students for free access to a quality education were praised by Castro as well.

Tuesday marks the 50th anniversary of the United States' trade embargo with Cuba, the longest running embargo ever.
