Lithium ion batteries could help make electric cars more attractive. They're not only able to store more energy, they're also smaller and last longer. But so far they have not been allowed in cars because it was feared short-circuits could trigger explosions. Now a company in Saxony appears to have solved this problem by separating positive and negative poles with a special ceramic foil. The technology could finally make lithium ion batteries suitable for use in automobiles.
