The disguised prototype of the T-Cross - VW's new baby SUV - is being test driven in public, not in the standard black and white stickers of a disguised vehicle but with a multicolored covering. On its side it bears a logo that reads "I am more".
The German auto giant has said savings will come from culling models as well as workforce. The company also plans to triple the number of SUVs in its fleet while expanding its offer of electric cars.
German automakers VW and BMW each increased sales to more than 300,000 cars in the US in 2018 while the sales of several competitors fell. VW had a second year of higher sales, while BMW posted its first jump since 2015.
The automotive industry is coming under increasing pressure worldwide due to a growing focus on electric mobility, autonomous driving and digital services. Competition from China is also on the rise.
Chief Executive Oliver Blume has said the sports carmaker will focus on petrol/gasoline, hybrid and all-electric vehicles. Porsche and its parent Volkswagen have seen their image take a beating in the wake of Dieselgate.
