Amir fled to Germany in 2005, when he was 16 years old. Because he had taken part in protests against the government he felt persecuted and under threat in his country. He was given a place to live in an orphanage in Munich, along with other under-age refugees. He finished school with good grades and, with the help of his court-appointed guardian Albert, found an apprenticeship in a bakery. He adapted quickly to life in Germany, but his first application for asylum was turned down.
