World in Progress: Sterilization Virginia

The US state of Virginia is grappling with some painful history that's not very well known: its eugenics movement. In the early 20th century, many US states passed laws allowing the government to sterilize so-called “defectives”, and some 65,000 Americans were sterilized under these laws. Now the state of Virginia is starting to make amends, offering $25,000 in compensation to people.
