German Foreign Minister Guido Westerwelle delivered a speech on Tuesday to DW's Global Media Forum, reflecting on the forum's topic, "Culture, Education, Media: Shaping a Sustainable World."

"Education plays a central role in globalization," Westerwelle said. "Access to a good education is decisive in personal progress."

Westerwelle pointed out that a nation's creativity and knowledge are what lead to success, and both are products of education. Education, he said, is the key to a tolerant and pluralistic society and leads to equality and respect. Germany's foreign policy is a reflection of these values, Westerwelle said.

"We support with actions, processes that lead to openness and democratization," he said.

The DW Global Media Forum continues through Wednesday in Bonn.
