There are some heavyweight clashes in European World Cup qualifying this week, including Spain against Italy in Group G. The Spanish have recalled a veteran striker whose goals helped win the World Cup in 2010: David Villa.
Australian officials said their players were "bruised and battered" during a massive fight at an Asian qualifier. But one Philippine official said he was proud of his country's team for "standing our ground."
England have booked their place in the World Cup semifinals for the first time since 1990 courtesy of a 2-0 win over Sweden. Harry Maguire and Dele Alli got the goals each side of halftime.
France may have won the World Cup, which reflects well on the French league. However, statistics compiled by DW show that a different league was far more successful at this World Cup.
